How to Know When it’s Time to Outsource a Copywriter + Tips for Onboarding!

The fact that you landed here probably means you already realized your messaging matters.

Chances are you have a successful, high-integrity business that allows you to reach your goals and provide transformative results for your clients, but you know that in order to keep up with those transformative results, your messaging has to work even when you can’t.

In order to continue to scale your business, perfecting and streamlining your messaging is key to capturing your audience's attention and converting them from browsers to buyers.

You’re ready to scale your business to the next level, and know that automating your sales funnels and marketing messaging can help you by leaps and bounds.

Are you…

  • Lacking enough time to focus on your marketing, so you’re not seeing the growth you need?

  • Struggling with creating engaging and effective messaging that resonates with your ideal client and drives conversions?

  • Wanting to improve the quality of your marketing materials so they effectively communicate the full value of your offer?

  • Needing a fresh perspective because you’ve become too close to your offer and might have trouble communicating its full value to potential customers?

If you answered YES to any of these questions, it is time to outsource a professional copywriter to help you automate and scale your business with your messaging so that you can focus on the things you love most about your business.

To ensure you outsource the right copywriter for your business, I’ve included a few questions below that you’ll want to ensure your potential copywriter can answer before you hire them!

I’ve also included a short checklist of items you’ll want to know as you onboard your copywriter.

What to ask your copywriter before you hire them to ensure they are the right fit for you.

  • What experience do you have as a copywriter?
Do they have a portfolio or recent examples they can share with you of work they have completed?

  • What kind of writing do you specialize in?
This will help you determine if they are a good match for the type of copy and content you need to grow your business.

  • How do you approach research and gather information for writing?
The process is so important for any business. You will want to ensure your copywriter has a specific process for onboarding you as a client, conducting research, and gathering the right information to help them write copy that converts!

  • What is your availability and turnaround time?

It's important to know if they can meet your deadlines and if they are available for ongoing projects. Typically I find it best when you have an ongoing relationship with a client because, over time, you can better understand their business, voice, tone, and personality – and it allows for exponentially better content and copy!

You can collaborate and work together to ensure you’re chasing the right goals at the right time!

  • What is your pricing structure, and what is included in your package?
This will help you understand the costs involved and what you can expect to receive for your investment.

  • Do you have experience writing for my industry/niche?

If you have specific needs or terminology related to your industry, knowing if they have experience writing in that area is essential. This isn’t a make-or-break, but often a good way to know who they have worked with and how they get to know their clients.

  • Do you have any formal training, education, or certifications in copywriting?

This will help you understand if they are reputable and continuing to learn and grow so they can better help serve your business. Learning should NEVER stop!

  • Do you have any references I can reach out to?

If they are willing to share references with you of their past clients, that is typically a good sign they are trustworthy and reliable!

If the copywriter has checked the box on each of these questions, and you’ve decided they’re the right fit for you, it’s time to bring them on board!

Things to Know and Prepare as you Onboard Your Copywriter

  • Define the roles and responsibilities.
Most copywriters will have a specific process they follow and items they will ask of you when you sign on to work with them.

    • A contract that lays out the scope of work they’ll be completing for you as well as the type of relationship (one-time project, ongoing retainer support, contract, etc.)

    • A questionnaire to learn more about you, your brand, your voice, and your offers

    • A 60-90 minute strategy call to develop your goals and aspirations and map out a plan to help you reach your biggest marketing goals through your messaging

  • Provide Access to Resources

You will want to ensure your copywriter has access to any resources that will help them write THE best copy + content for you!

  • Brand guidelines

  • Client testimonial files

  • Previous email + marketing messaging that has had good conversion rates

  • Analytics for your current marketing campaigns (emails, funnels, sales pages, etc.)

  • Introduce Your Team

You will want to introduce your copywriter to key employees and team members they’ll be working with during the time of your project.

It will be crucial to have ONE main point of contact throughout the project so that it can be as streamlined as possible and information doesn’t get lost. This will help the project stay on track!
